A smelly reservoir is usually caused by bacteria or organic buildup in standing water. While it can be unpleasant, it’s typically easy to manage with a few simple care steps.
If you notice an odor coming from your easyplant reservoir, here’s how to freshen things up and help prevent it from coming back.
How to Get Rid of Reservoir Odors
1. Clean the Reservoir
If the smell is coming directly from the reservoir:
Wait until the reservoir is empty
Spray the inside with hydrogen peroxide
Let it dry completely
Repeat the process a couple of times if needed
Hydrogen peroxide helps eliminate bacteria that can contaminate the water and cause odors.
2. Treat the Top Layer of Soil
Sometimes bacteria or excess moisture near the surface of the soil can contribute to smells.
To help with this:
Mix 4 parts water with 1 part hydrogen peroxide
Lightly spray the top of the soil once a week until the smell is gone
Avoid soaking the soil. A light surface spray is all that’s needed.
3. Move the Plant to a Brighter Spot
Brighter indirect light can help the top layer of soil dry out a bit faster, which may reduce excess moisture and discourage odor-causing bacteria.
A spot with bright, indirect sunlight is ideal for most easyplants.
4. Keep the Reservoir Lid Closed
After adding water, make sure the reservoir lid is fully closed.
Keeping the lid shut helps prevent dust, debris, and outside contaminants from getting into the water.
Preventing Future Odors
A clean reservoir, proper light, and keeping the lid closed are usually enough to prevent smells from returning.
If the odor continues even after cleaning, check that:
The plant is receiving enough light
The reservoir isn’t being overfilled
The soil surface isn’t staying constantly wet
With a few small adjustments, your reservoir should stay fresh and odor-free.
